Deadline Extended!

Good news everyone, the deadline to apply for the 2018 EON-ELSI Winter School has been extended. This will give everyone a few extra days to finish their essays and make sure their reference letter is submitted.

The new deadline for all materials (including reference letter) is:
September 19th, 23:59 (Japan Standard time)

We received more than 200 very strong applications. We contacted the selected applicants, and we will not be able to reply to further inquiries concerning this year’s school selection from the Contact form.

Less than 1 Month Until Application Deadline!

Hi everyone! It might be hard to believe, but the Winter School application deadline is less than one month away (New Deadline: September 19th, 2017)! Your application must be submitted by this day, and please remember that all reference letters must be received by the application deadline. The application information can be found here. We are happy to announce that the application form is now online!

Please check the application page for the most up-to-date information and links.

The application will be open from now until September 15th, 2017. Don’t forget to give your reference enough time to send us the required reference letter.

Please be prepared to fill out the application form. You will be required to answer 2 questions:

  • How will you benefit by attending the winter school? – please mention your background, motivation and goals (1,200 characters)
  • How will you be able to contribute to the Winter School? (1,200 characters)

We also ask you to provide the name of a reference who will be required to send a reference letter. Applicants should contact the letter writer and ask them to send it to (winterschool-letters-2018@ml.elsi.jp) by September 15th, 2017.

Tentative Schedule and List of Topics

We’ve added a tentative schedule for the field portion of the course in the Izu/Hakone region, as well as a tentative list of seminars and hands-on tutorials that will be taking place during the classroom portion of the course at ELSI! Please see below, or check out the Curriculum tab. We anticipate that the application will be up and running in the near future, so if you haven’t done so already, subscribe to e-mail updates by filling out the form on the side.

Tentative Schedule

Jan 21st 
Arrival in Tokyo – You MUST arrive by the evening on the 21st in order to be at ELSI at 9AM on January 22nd for the start of the school; if you are late arriving at ELSI on the morning of Jan 22nd (for whatever reason), you will not be able to attend the Winter School and you will be solely responsible for all expenses incurred

Jan 22nd
9AM – Meet at ELSI for registration and introduction

Field Portion of the Course (Jan 23 – Jan 26)

Jan 23nd – Jan 26th
Morning/Day Time – Field expeditions to various geological sites in the Izu peninsula and the Hakone region, including volcanic formations and faults, geoparks, hot springs, and local research institutes
Afternoon – Arrive at lodging (local inns and hotels in the Izu/Hakone region)
Evening (except Jan 26th) – Dinner and seminars/discussion

Jan 26th
~6PM – Return to ELSI

Jan 27th – 28th
(Mostly) free time over the weekend (there may be a lecture and/or optional organized group excursions to points in greater Tokyo)

Classroom Portion of the Course (Jan 29 – Feb 2)

Morning/Afternoon – We will have various seminars and hands-on tutorials from experts in a diverse range of research fields. There will also be ample opportunity to interact with the research community at ELSI, participate in ELSI social activities, and join local excursions to parts of greater Tokyo

Update in Logistics

The Winter School is approaching! (Yes, it is in almost 8 months, but we are already working hard on it)

We have updated the logistics information, and we are still working on the exact curriculum. Be prepared to do some field work (fishing bacterias at an onsen and looking at not-so-old volcanoes) and computer simulations!
